The name Udupi is believed to have come from the Sanskrit words “Udu & Pa” that means “stars” and “Lord“. According to legend, the Moon’s light was once reduced due to a curse by King Daksha. 1. Malpe Beach: The Malpe Beach is a virgin beach, located at a distance about 6 kms from Udupi. It is an important port and a fishing harbor in the state of Karnataka. The endless stretch of golden sand, graciously swaying palm trees, clear blue sky and the gentle murmur of the sea, set the perfect mood for an idyllic holiday. 2. Maravanthe Beach (54 km from Udupi): Maravanthe wears the look of a fairyland with the picturesque Kodachadri Hills forming a backdrop to the Sauparnika River on one side and miles of unspoilt white sand on the other. Maravanthe is a uniquely positioned beach in Coastal Karnataka with Arabian Sea on one side and Souparnika river on the other. This unique combination of sea and river on each side of a highway is hard to find elsewhere and is said to be the only one in India. The golden sand, clear blue sky, swaying palm trees, and the endless shore make Maravanthe an undoubtedly attractive tourist destination. 3. Ottinene Beach: Baindur, a hamlet 45 km from Maravanthe has a lovely beach, Ottinene with its overhanging cliffs and backwaters below Kshitija Nesara Dhama. The beach and backwaters is a scenic beach where the Byndoor river enters Arabian sea. The shallow beach area, with hills in one corner is safe, scenic and photogenic. Sunset view is worth waiting for. The best way to locate Ottinene is to search for Sai Vishram resort in Byndoor. It is marked on maps and is easier to find. Since the resort itself is located on the beach so reaching here means you have reached Ottinene. The beach where the resort is located is their private beach and outsiders are not allowed there. However you continue to drive upwards towards Marvanthe and you’ll see Ottinene beach after a km or so. The beach has a small temple, few village houses and wooded area nearby. The beach is a mix of rocks and sand with loads of crab holes. The area is mostly secluded and one can be at peace just listening to sea waves clashing the rocks.

4. Kapu Beach (12 km from Udupi) and Lighthouse: Kapu is a beach village in coastal Karnataka. Kapu’s long sandy beaches offer a panoramic view of the Arabian Sea. With its tropical climate and a bevy of attractions that beckon tourists from across the country, Kapu is predominantly known for its greenery that surrounds the beach. 2. St Mary’s Island(10 km): A National Geological Monument, St. Mary’s Island is a quaint island just off the coast of Udupi. A 30-minute boat ride away from Malpe harbour, St. Mary’s Island is a geological treasure and hosts some of the most beautiful beaches in the country. The island is around 300m long and 100m wide. It is famous for its unique salt rock formations. Due to this geological importance, St Mary’s Island is declared as a National Geological Monument. Watching the sunset standing on the crystalline rocks is one of the most alluring experiences on the island. St. Mary’s Island still bears the cross that was placed by Vasco Da Gama in 1498.

4. Kodachadri (110 km): The Kodachadri hill is a part of the Western Ghats and forms a lovely backdrop to the famous Kollur Mookambika Temple. Famed for its glorious sunrises and sunsets, this hill range is part of the Mookambika Temple Nature Reserve. The peak of Kodachadri (at an altitude of 1343 m above sea level) can be reached by a five-hour trek. Trekking in Kodachadri can be an adventurous and spiritual experience. On the western side, the hill descends steeply for about 1220 m, meeting the forests of Udupi district. The trek up to the ancient temple from this point involves a climb of 4 km through thick jungle trails. Kollur is an ideal base from which to explore the hills.

5. Hastha Shilpa Heritage Village: Hasta Shilpa, is an open-air museum which aims to preserve the traditional homes and artefacts of the coastal Karnataka region. Founded by the late Vijayanath Shenoy, a renowned heritage conservationist and antique collector who had at times saved many precious artifacts from garbage and waste dumps. His own house was his first museum which he later turned into a trust “Hastha Shilpa Trust” with like-minded people. Today, this museum, on about 6 acres of land, has restored around 30 traditional buildings for people to see. It offers a fascinating glimpse of the coastal Karnataka’s history and architecture.

6. Manipal Museum of Anatomy & Pathology: Manipal Museum of Anatomy & Pathology houses 3000+ specimens and samples related to anatomy. Manipal is an education hub with a large number of educational institutes run by Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE). It attracts more than twenty five thousand students every year from various countries who pursue medicine, dental sciences, engineering and business management.

Dr. Kota Shivaram Karanth Theme Park, Kota (24 km): Kota, a small village in Udupi, is synonymous with renowned writer and Jananapeeth awardee Dr. Kota Shivaram Karanth, also known as ‘Kadala Teerada Bhargava’. Here, a theme park dedicated to him has been constructed that comprises a landscaped garden, a library, an art gallery, an anganawadi and an indoor auditorium. In the garden, there’s a small pool with bronze statue of Dr. Karanth in the middle. Sculptures that represent some of the iconic characters of his novels also decorate this garden. The library has a collection of all the works of the author and also from his personal collections.

9. Kshtija Nesara Dhama: A viewpoint and picnic centre overlooking Ottinene beach near Byndoor.

Religious Places in and around Udupi

1. Udupi Sri Krishna Temple: Sri Krishna Temple Thousands of devotees throng this temple town to offer prayers to Lord Krishna. It is said that the Krishna idol here is the most beautiful idol of Lord Krishna. Lord Krishna is depicted here as a small boy (Balakrishna). The idol is not seen directly, but through a 9 holed window called the Navagraha Kitiki. Another interesting attraction at this temple is the ‘Kanakana Kindi’ – a small window through which Lord Krishna is believed to have given darshan to his ardent devotee, saint Kanakadasa. According to legend, Kanakadasa was of a low caste and was not allowed entry to the temple. Undaunted, he went behind the temple and prayed to the Lord through a small crack in the wall. Pleased, the statue of Lord Krishna turned around and gave him darshan. Just adjacent is the Kanakadasa Mantapa, which houses a statue of the saint. There is a beautiful water tank nearby called Madhwa Sarovara with a little mantapa in the centre. The image of Lord Krishna is taken on a float during festivals. Udupi is a great centre of Sanskrit learning and the language is imparted through the Ashta Mathas (Eight Maths): Puttige, Pejavara, Palimaru, Adamaru, Shirur, Sodhe, Krishnapura and Kaniyuru, which are located around the temple.

2. Kollur Mookambika Temple, Kollur (74 km): Sri Mookambika Temple in Kollur, Udupi district attracts devotees from all parts of South India. The village of Kollur lies amid the green canopy of the Western Ghats, on the base of Kodachadri Hill. Here, the Mookambika Temple, one of the seven most sacred spots of Salvation, is dedicated to the Goddess of emotional power and strength. The temple has a gold plated crest and copper roofs. Adi Shankaracharya, the great philosopher, is said to have visited this temple to perform penance. Adi Shankaracharya is also believed to have consecrated the idol of Goddess Mookambika.

3. Chaturmukha Basadi Karkala: Chaturmukha Basadi is a popular 16th century Jain temple in Karkala, a taluk headquarter and town in Udupi district in coastal Karnataka. Chaturmukha basadi is located on an elevated field in the middle of coconut plantation and paddy fields. Chaturmukha translates to “four faces”. Chaturmukha Basadi is open on all four sides, with four identical doorways all leading to inner sanctum- Gurba Gruha. Temple doorways feature various Jain Thirthankaras as well as Hindu gods and goddesses. There is also a 700 year old stone temple dedicated to Lord Ananthapadmanabha (a form of Lord Vishnu). Nearby is St Lawrence Church at Attur, a catholic church christened after St. Lawrence and was built in 1839 in Karkala.

4. Karkala Gomateshwara: Built in 1432, the towering 42ft monolith of Lord Gomateshwara, (the biggest one after the monolith at Shravanabelagola) standing atop a granite outcrop on the outskirts of the town, is the main attraction in Karkala.

5. Anantheshwara and Chandramouleshwara Temple: These 2 temples located nearby are much older than the celebrated Sri Krishna Temple. Anantheshwara Temple is where saint Madhwacharya received spiritual education. Located opposite is the Chandramouleshwara Temple.

6. Varanga: A scenic basadi in the centre of a pond, 40 kms from Udupi.

7. Mahalinga Temple Brahmavara: 9th century temple in Brahmavara, 12 kms from Udupi.

8. Ambalpadi Temple: Ambalpadi Temple is famous for the image of Lord Janardhana and draws a large number of devotees. A Mahakali shrine with a 5ft high wooden image is also found here.

9. Mount Rosary Church: Mount Rosary Church is a roman catholic church in the coastal town of Udupi. Built in 1837, Mount Rosary church is very close to National Highway 66 and an important place of worship among Christian community in Udupi.

18. St. Lawrence Shrine Basilica or Attur Basilica: St. Lawrence of Karkala) is a Roman Catholic church in Karkala, India. It was built in 1759 and is purported to be the site of many miracles. It is by characterized its Attur Jatre or Attur Festival. Attur Church is situated on the outskirts of Karkala in the Karnataka state of India. It is situated 58 km from Mangalore. Placed amidst placid greenery, the Attur-Karkala parish has a rich history. The church oversees a school and an orphanage.

Wildlife Places in and around Udupi

1. Someshwara Wildlife Sanctuary (55 km):Someshwara Wildlife Sanctuary has been named after Lord “Someshwara” the presiding deity of the famous Someshwara Temple located within the limits of the sanctuary. It is situated in Karkala and Kundhapur Taluk of Udupi. With an area of about 314.25 sq. km., Someshwara Wildlife Sanctuary has semi-evergreen and evergreen forests. The Kudremukh National Park lies to the Southeast of this sanctuary. The Agumbe Ghat located inside this sanctuary receives average rainfall of about 8000 mm and thus called “Cherrapunji‎ of South India”. The state run Jungle Lodges and Resorts operates the Seethanadi Nature Camp in Hebri.

2. Sri Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary: Named after Goddess Mookambika the presiding deity of the famous Mookambika Temple at Kollur which is located at the heart of the Sanctuary. Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary spans over 370.37 sq km and is thick with evergreen, semi-evergreen and moist deciduous forests of the Western Ghats, and small patches of teak plantations. Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary forms a vital connecting link between Someshwara Wildlife Sanctuary located on the southern side and Sharavathi Wildlife Sanctuary located on the northern side. Art, Traditions, Folkk Dances & Festivals in and around Udupi

1. Yakshagana: Yakshagana is a traditional folk dance form popular in coastal Karnataka districts. Watching Yakshagana performance is a treat to the senses due to the amalgamation of unique costumes, rhythmic music and unique performance involving dialogues, music, dance and action.

2. Huli Vesha: Huli Vesha or Tiger faced dance is a dance form unique to coastal Karnataka. Huli vesha is performed by local youth during the navarathri festivals (the 9 nights long festival which often falls in the month of October).

3. Vitla Pindi: Vitla Pindi, also known as Mosaru Kudike is a popular festival in Udupi city, coastal Karnataka. Vitla Pindi helps people recall childhood antics of Lord Krishna and is celebrated during Srikrishna Janmastami, which falls during the month of August-September. 4. Centre for Folk, Performing Arts, Udupi: The centre aims at documenting, preserving and disseminating the folk theatre of Karnataka. This initiative is funded by the Ford Foundation and supported by the Academy of General Education, Manipal and MGM College Trust. The centre houses information on almost all forms of folk worship traditions, folk medicine traditions, folk music and cultural beliefs of the State. It maintains an archival treasure house consisting of videos, documentaries, slides, photographs. and audio tapes.

7.Udupi Paryaya Festival: The colorful Paryaya Festival, where officiating priests from one of the Ashta Mathas hand over their responsibilities to other pontiffs, beckons thousands of devotees from all over the country every alternate year.

9. Kori Katta: The ‘Kori katta’ or the cock fight, the famous folk sport of the coastal parts of Karnataka: Mangalore, Udupi and Kundapura had these organized fights during religious festivals. Well within an organized system, this cock would have to brave his opponents. Fair play is what his master would insist on, he would face a rooster with the body weight just as his and the rules of the game would be specified to all. The decision would be that of his master’s on whether he would face one cock or two or more. The fight would not exceed more than three rounds. Either he could run away or could be injured during the fight or die fighting.

10 Butharadane: Bhootaradhana or Deity worship is very popular in Tulunadu. A ritual called nema or kola is performed for ghosts/gods. Conducting kola/nema has its own race and rules. The face is painted, wrapped in a Siri made of coconut feathers, and danced invoking the deity. The Divine Dancer gives justice to human beings and resolves disputes through the Word of God. Deity worship is the fundamental religious belief of the Tulu race.

Bhootha Aradhane is very common in the coastal towns of Karnataka. Idols representing ‘bhoothas’ are taken out in a procession to the beating of drums and bursting of firecrackers. As the procession ends, the idols are placed on a pedestal.Frantically pacing up and down, he enters into a possessed state and acts as an oracle.

Udupi and Mangalorean Cuisines

1. Patrode: An itchy, tangy dish made from colocasia leaves one should not miss when in Udupi.

3. Banana or Mangalore Bun: Sweet and tasty bun, a perfect snack or quick bite.

5. Mundakki Upkari: A tasty snack made from puffed rice, spiced up with oil and chili powder.

6. Koli Sukka or Kori Sukka: Mangalorean chicken sukka is a dry or semi-dry, highly flavorful dish of chicken cooked in a masala of aromatics – onions, garlic, and ginger – in ghee with ground dry-roasted whole spices and golden roasted coconut. This delectable chicken sukka recipe is from the Mangalore–Udupi area, along the Konkan coast in south-western India. It is called kori sukka or kori ajadina in the local Tulu language and simply means dry chicken dish. Chicken sukka Mangalore style has a very thick almost non-existent gravy and a dry consistency.

7. Koli Saaru (Chicken-Rasam): For the non-vegetarians, a rasam made by cooking chicken and spicy masala.

8. Kori Rotti: Kori rotti is a spicy dish of Tulu Udupi-Mangalorean cuisine, a combination of red-chili and coconut milk based chicken curry and crisp, dry wafers made from boiled rice. Kori means chicken in Tulu.

9. Moode and Kottige: Moode, also called as Kottige is a traditional Mangalore and Udupi people dish. This is prepared by steam cooking batter similar to that of idli in moulds prepared from Banana leaves or Kedige/Screw Pine leaves. Some people also prepare using Jackfruit leaf moulds. The Kedige/Screw Pine leaf moulds are usually available in some vegetable markets. The banana leaf moulds are usually prepared at home by rolling the leaf in a particular fashion. Brahmavara

Brahmavara is a taluk in Udupi district located on NH 66 (formerly NH 17), 13 kilometers (8.1 mi) north of the Udupi in Karnataka, India. Brahmavara is about 68 kilometers north of Mangalore and about 13 kilometers (10 mi) north of Udupi on the National highway NH 66 (formerly NH 17). The Suvarna and Sita Rivers, originating in Western Ghats, form backwaters around Brahmavara before joining the Arabian Sea near Hangarkatte. Brahmavara is surrounded by several villages, including Handadi, Baikady, Pethri, Kunjal, Kumragod, Salikeri, Haradi and Matapadi.

Barkur

Barkur is a historic town located about 16 km from Udupi. Tourists acknowledge it for its rich cultural heritage and ancient temples, which testify to the region’s glorious past. The town is also home to several ancient forts and offers a glimpse into the region’s history. A long drive on NH 17 (new number: NH 66) and a right turn at Brahmavar led Shrihas and me to the small town Barkur, after crossing River Seetha. Getting some nice snaps for my photoblog Prachitra was the actual intention of this road trip. Just as we entered the small town, we came upon a very old mandapa (a pavilion) made of granite slabs, at the main crossroads in the town. Barkur is to the north of Brahmavara, and the temple city Udupi to its south. Barkur was an ancient city, and was the ancient capital of the Tulu kingdom. It was known as Barakanur, and was once a major trade and commercial centre around 2nd century CE. Barkur was a capital of the Alupa Kings and also a provincial headquarters during the Vijayanagara period. It was a capital city in those times, which was developed much before Mangalore and Udupi. All that remain now of that historical city are just some ruins scattered all around Barkur.

Kundapura

Kundapura, officially Kundapura, is a coastal town situated in the Udupi district of the state of Karnataka, India. This town was known as Coondapoor while it was part of the erstwhile South Canara district (1862–1947) of the Madras Presidency of British India. Present-day Kundapura is administered by the Kundapura Town Municipal Council and serves as the headquarters of the Kundapura Taluk of Udupi district. The name Kundapura can be traced to the Kundeshwara Temple built by Kundavarma of the Alupa dynasty who ruled the region in the 10th – 11th century, in the vicinity of the Panchagangavalli River. In Kundagannada language, the word “Kunda” also refers to the flower Jasmine where the Majority people of Kundapura grow flower Jasmine in this region which came to be called as Kundapura(Land of Jasmine)

Baindoor

Ottinene is a beautiful hill station located about 40 km from Udupi, near Baindur which has a stunning natural beauty and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape to the people. The hill station is also home to several trekking trails and is a popular spot for adventure enthusiasts.

Kollur

Kollur is a famous pilgrimage center located about 70 km from Udupi. Furthurmore the Mookambika Temple is dedicated to Goddess Mookambika a temple to definitely not miss out. The temple is a major pilgrimage center and attracts a large number of devotees from all over the country.

Belman

The Shree Durga Parameshwari Temple in Belmannu is very famous, and people claim it was built before the 7th century AD. In 1952, they found the oldest Kannada copper plate inscription under the foundation of this temple. Belmannu is indeed famous for the St. Joseph Church, which someone founded in 1896.

Saligrama

Saligrama is a small town located about 22 km from Udupi. The main attraction is it’s famous Venkataramana Temple, which is one of the oldest temples in the region. The town is also famous for its traditional wood carvings and handicrafts. The Gurunarasimha Temple is also one of the famous temples of the region among the devotees.

Maravanthe

Maravanthe is a village and a beach in Byndoor Taluk, Udupi District, Karnataka, India. It is about 115 km from industrial hub Mangalore, 55 km from Udupi.18 km from Kundapura. and 21 km from Byndoor. NH-66 (erstwhile NH-17) runs next to the beach and the Suparnika River flows on the other side of the road. Outlook traveller considers it one of Karnataka’s most beautiful beaches. The Suparnika River, which almost touches the Arabian Sea here, makes a U-turn and goes westward to join the sea after a journey of nearly more than 10 km (6.2 mi).

Kumbashi

Kumbhashi or Anegudde is a village in the Kundapura taluk of Udupi district, India.[1] It lies en route from Udupi towards Kundapura on the NH 66. One of the best known temples to Ganesha in Udupi district is that of Shri Maha Ganapathi at Kumbhashi. Kumbhashi is one of the seven “Mukti Sthalas” (Parashurama Kshetra) in coastal Karnataka.

Karkala

Karkala is a small town located about 35 km from Udupi. The town earns recognition for its historic Jain temples and beautiful natural scenery. It is also famous for holding an annual fair during the Mahamastakabhisheka festival. It is also famous for Athur church.
